This position is responsible for leading a team of medical coders, performing audits on coded medical records, and working closely with physicians to ensure proper coding practices are followed. The Supervisor will also be responsible for fostering a culture of continuous improvement, supporting the team in achieving high standards of performance, and driving performance improvement initiatives.

As the Medical Coding Supervisor, you will be at the forefront of managing and overseeing the daily operations of the medical coding team. You will provide leadership and mentorship to coding professionals, ensuring adherence to coding standards, compliance with industry regulations, and accuracy in coding for all specialties. Your role will involve auditing medical records, providing feedback to both coders and physicians, and initiating projects to improve team performance. This role requires strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, along with expertise in multispecialty coding and billing practices. This is a full-time job.

Required Qualifications

Leadership (<50% of time)

  • Supervise and manage a team of medical coders, ensuring high standards of coding accuracy, efficiency, and compliance with industry regulations.
  • Lead audits of coded medical records, providing detailed feedback and coaching to medical coders and physicians to improve accuracy and adherence to coding guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations related to medical coding and billing.
  • Oversee and monitor coding workflows to ensure timely completion of tasks, while tracking and analyzing key performance indicators (KPIs) to maintain high levels of efficiency, accuracy, and productivity.
  • Train and mentor medical coding staff to foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Implement performance improvement initiatives and lead projects to enhance coding accuracy and productivity.
  • Preparation of MIPS (Merit-based Incentive Payment System) reports and performance tracking.

Medical Coding (>50% of time)

  • Review, analyze, and input clinic claim codes (ICD-9/ICD-10, HCPCS, CPT) based on EMR records, ensuring proper modifiers and documentation.
  • Educate and consult with physicians and nursing staff on coding practices, ensuring accurate and thorough clinical documentation.
  • Stay current with updates on medical treatments, procedures, diagnosis classifications, payer updates, and coverage changes, and communicate relevant information to providers, supervisors, and the billing team.
  • Use coding manuals and software to ensure proper code selection and compliance with industry standards, including HIPAA, AHIMA, and AAPC ethical guidelines.
  • Enter coded data into EHR or practice management systems for billing accuracy and maintain organized, accurate coding files.
  • Collaborate with the billing department to ensure accurate insurance claims submission, address discrepancies, and resolve coding errors or denials.
  • Resubmit denied claims after adjustments, assisting with audits and maintaining strong knowledge of medical terminology and disease processes.
  • Maintain NDC updates, NCCN guidelines, and work with A/R and billing teams to resolve claim rejections, troubleshoot billing issues, and ensure claims are processed correctly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an oncology practice setting is highly preferred.
  • Prior experience in initiating and leading performance improvement projects within a medical coding environment.
