At Oregon Specialty Group, we take care of people.  The Revenue Cycle department is critical to this mission because we help to ease our patients’ financial burdens.  We ensure they are informed, create personalized financial plans, and provide eligible patients with application assistance.

Position Overview

The Financial Counselor Intern is a key resource to the patient to ensure they understand their benefits and the financial impact of their treatment at Oregon Specialty Group. This significant position is responsible for reviewing, determining eligibility, and preparing necessary documents for patient assistance programs for eligible patients. In addition, the Financial Counselor Intern acts as a liaison between patients and their insurance companies by coordinating payments and answering questions from both parties.

Essential Job Functions

 

  • Assist patients with financial assistance applications and ensure award funds are applied to their bills.
  • Resolve billing discrepancies by coordinating with insurance companies on denials or disputes.
  • Oversee patient payment plan database, processes, and communication strategies.
  • Analyze and track patient accounts receivable (AR), reporting on balances and patient progress weekly.
  • Set up and maintain payment plans for eligible patients, follow up on overdue accounts, and collect payments via phone.
  • Educate patients about their medical bills, explaining charges and billing statements.
  • Keep accurate records of financial assessments, payment arrangements, and communications with patients and insurers.
  • Collaborate with the revenue cycle team to enhance processes, reduce financial strain, and ensure regulatory compliance (e.g., HIPAA).
  • Support satellite clinics by coordinating financial assistance resources, including foundations and social service agencies.
  • Update patient financial alerts, assist in workload reporting, and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Provide emotional support to patients facing financial challenges from medical treatments and guide them through assistance options.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Revenue Cycle Manager.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or has a Bachelor’s Degree Healthcare Administration, Business, finance, or other related field.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills with proficiency in computers, especially Word and Excel.
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel proficiency.
