Study Shows: Patients Experience Longer Survival in Community Oncology

Posted in In the News

New real-world research from Community Oncology Alliance and Flatiron Health shows that patients treated in community oncology settings achieve better or similar survival outcomes compared to national benchmarks.

Key Study Results:

  • Eight months longer median survival for patients treated for metastatic breast cancer (mBC) compared to national benchmarks.
  • Two months longer median survival for patients treated for metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) compared to national benchmarks.
  • Consistently higher survival rates at one, three, and five years relative to national benchmarks.

Researchers analyzed data from nearly 98,000 patients treated at a community oncology practice within the Flatiron Health Research Network (FHRN). Outcomes were compared to population-based estimates from the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database.

For patients with cancer, every additional month matters – and this first-of-its-kind study shows that patients receiving care in community oncology practices experienced longer survival compared to national benchmarks. The findings were released at the 2026 Community Oncology Conference in Orlando.
