Regence & Salem Health Contract Termination: Resources for Impacted Patients

Posted in Press Releases

Following the contract termination between Regence BlueCross BlueShield and Salem Health, we are supporting an increasing number of our patients who are facing difficulties accessing care. This is because some BlueCross BlueShield-affiliated plans, such as Anthem and Premera, are also affected. These insurers operate independently but are part of the BlueCross BlueShield provider network, meaning that patients with these plans may also find that Salem Health is no longer in-network for them.

For patients who are unsure about their coverage or experiencing difficulty accessing care, here are key steps to take:

What You Can Do:

  1. Check Your Insurance Coverage – Call the Member Services number on the back of your insurance card to confirm if your plan is impacted and review your out-of-network benefits.
  2. Ask for a Care Manager – When calling your insurance provider, request to speak with a care manager. They can help explain your coverage and assist with navigating your options.
  3. Explore Continuity of Care – If you are in the middle of treatment, you may qualify for a Continuity of Care exemption, which can allow you to continue care at in-network rates for a limited time. You must request this directly from your insurance company.
  4. Report Your Experience – Patients who are struggling to access care can report their experience to the Oregon State Insurance Commissioner. This is the most effective way to be heard and advocate for better access to care. If your plan was issued outside of Oregon, be sure to contact the insurance commissioner in the state where your policy was issued.
